God-Honoring Thoughts

What we think is the center of everything. In this passage, the Apostle Paul was helping the Christians of Philippi, and us today, to address the nature of our thoughts. As I’m sure you would agree, not all “good” thoughts are worthy of praise and not all “bad” thoughts are of ill repute.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Philippians 4:8 ESV

As a result, I found the Amplified translation most helpful. For me, it provided a gauge, if you will, for determining what thoughts are in fact encouraged in this passage. Such musings are those that are confirmed by scripture.

Process

In life, we will hear opinions, read books, and witness an unlimited amount of thoughts throughout our day. Just consider those instant thoughts that pulse through your mind as your scroll through Instagram or Facebook.

Like…

…That’s cute.

…What in the world?!

…Now, he should be ashamed…

…I would like one of those…

And I could write a million more.

…I hate my job…

…If this child leaves this toy on the floor one more time…

…I need to lose 10 pounds…

…Why is she getting the promotion when I did the work?…

…I am praying for a financial blessing but my funds keep falling short…

Better yet, what do you think about constantly? What do you dwell on?

All of our thoughts should be God honoring. All of our thoughts should be loving towards God and others. All of our thoughts should exhibit our reverence for God and worthy of praise.

Not as in, you want someone to pat you on the back and say “Good job!” But that you want God to say “Well done”.

Principle

Christians should continually center their minds on virtuous, praiseworthy thoughts that are confirmed by God’s word.

Practical

Grab a small piece of paper like an index card. I would like for you to carry it in your pocket all day. Write down your internal thoughts. If you think about the same thing more than once, place a check mark next to it.

At the end of the day, consider, whether your thoughts were God honoring and how you can shift your thoughts concerning those matters. Then tear the paper and trash it. 😉

Prayer

Father,

Forgive me for dwelling on thoughts that do not glorify you. Help my will to be in accordance to Yours. Help me to have thoughts that provide peace found only in you.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

  3. OUCH!!!! again, another reminder to change my stinkin’ thinkin’.
I used to be so full of oppression and depression. I still have to check myself, but what’s in our heart (and mind) is what we speak, it becomes us. When I dwell on those things that don’t line up with who I am or who’s I am, it begins to change my outward “appearance”. I’ve never written down my thoughts, but when I notice that I am dwelling on the same negative thing far too much or too long, I immediately stop and ask for forgiveness. I pray my way through it and it never fails, the Holy Spirit ALWAYS gives me something “good” to think on. I have literally been in mid thought and asked myself if what I was rehearsing in my mind lined up with His truth. If the answer is no, I have to change what I’m thinking. Sometimes this is as easy as quoting my favorite scriptures. Sometimes I have to get in the Word and see what God has to say about what I’m dwelling on and rehearse His truth over and over until it becomes a part of me. Sometimes I ask myself is this a lie the enemy is feeding me or a truth God has given me. It has taken me years to get to this point, but it didn’t have to. I had to make a decision………
